그러면 무엇을 하여야 하리이까?

많은 사람들이 인생의 모든 힘을 들여서 쉬지 않고 무엇을 하려고 합니다. 그러나 끝내 이루거나 손에 쥐는 것은 없습니다. 너무나 상투적으로 들릴지 모르지만 결국 죽을 때는 아무 것도 가져갈 수 없기 때문입니다. 그렇게 죽을힘을 다해 살아서 이룬 것을 가져가지 못한다는 것은 그것은 인생의 목적이 아니라는 것입니다.

인생은 소모품입니다. 그것도 단 1회밖에 사용할 수 없습니다. 그렇다는 것은 인생의 목적은 그것이 무엇이든 무엇을 위하여 소비하는 것이라는 것입니다. 어떤 것을 위하여 인생은 소비되기 위하여 주어졌다는 것입니다. 그런데 사람들은 소비를 하려하지 않고 투자를 합니다. 투자를 한다는 것은 자기 수고에 대한 반대급부를 기대한다는 것입니다.

기본적으로 사람들은 육신의 풍요와 안녕을 위하여 수고합니다. 목적이 풍요와 안정인데 정작 몸과 마음은 고생을 하고 있습니다. 그래서 그 수고와 고생을 단시간으로 줄이기 위하여 일확천금을 노리고, 효율을 생각합니다. 하지만 그래봤자 결국은 다 가져가지 못합니다. 무엇인지는 모르지만 무엇을 위하여 소비하는 것이 인생의 목적인 인생이 투자를 통한 이익을 가지려하니 인생이 그렇게 고달픈 것입니다. 왼나사를 오른쪽으로 끼우는 격이기 때문입니다.

그렇다면 신앙은 어떨까요? 이 블로그에서는 예수를 믿는다는 것이 무엇을 하는 것이 아니라 예수 그리스도의 생명이 자기 안에 있으면 그렇게 하고자 했던 것들이 자연스럽게 된다는 것을 늘 말씀드리고 있습니다. 그러면 어떻게 해야 그런 믿음을 가지게 될까요? 라고 많이들 물어 옵니다. 심지어 반문도 합니다. 

여기서 주목해야 할 것은 예수 그리스도의 생명을 가지려면 무엇을 해야 하는지를 묻는다는 것입니다. 그러나 이 문제에 대한 답은 예수 그리스도의 생명을 가지게 된다는 것은 무엇을 해야 한다는 신앙의 프레임에서 벗어나는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 문제는 이것이 아주 생소하다는 것입니다. 늘 무엇을 해서 진일보해온 우리 인생들에게 무엇을 하지 않아도 된다고 하니 이것이 불안하고 생소한 것입니다.

출애굽을 하는 이스라엘의 백성들이 홍해에 다다랐을 때 앞에는 바다고 뒤에는 애굽의 군사들이 좇아오는 진퇴양난의 상황을 맞이하게 되었습니다. 그때 백성들은 모세에게 무엇이라도 해 보라고 원망했습니다. 그러나 그 때 하나님께서는 모세를 통하여 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

모세가 백성에게 이르되 너희는 두려워 말고 가만히 서서 여호와께서 오늘날 너희를 위하여 행하시는 구원을 보라 너희가 오늘 본 애굽 사람을 또 다시는 영원히 보지 못하리라(출 14:13)

누가복음 18장에는 부자 관원이 찾아와서 예수님께 “무엇을 하여야 영생을 얻으리이까?” 물었습니다. 그때 예수님께서 율법을 다 지켰는지를 물으시니 그는 다 지켰다고 했습니다. 그러자 예수님께서

네게 있는 것을 다 팔아 가난한 자들을 나눠 주라 그리하면 하늘에서 보화가 네게 있으리라 그리고 와서 나를 좇으라 하시니(눅 18:22)

라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그랬더니 그 사람이 부자인지라 근심하고 돌아갔다고 했습니다.

예수님께서는 그 사람이 부자인 것이 못마땅한 것이 아니었습니다. 부자라는 것은 재물이 많다는 것이고, 그것은 이 땅에서 무엇인가를 많이 한 결과와 증거라는 것입니다. 그러므로 가진 것을 팔아서 가난한 자들에게 주라고 하신 것은 “이제 더 이상 무엇을 하지 않는 사람이 되라”는 것입니다. 그랬더니 그 사람은 율법도 행했고, 부자가 되기 위해서도 열심히 무엇을 하던 사람인지라 그럴 수 없었던 것입니다. 패러다임을 바꿀 수 없었다는 것입니다. 무엇을 하지 않고 사는 것을 감당할 수 없다는 것입니다.

신앙은 생명의 세계입니다. 하나님을 믿는 믿음은 생명에 관한 것이라는 것입니다. 이것은 신념과 다릅니다. 아직 이루지 못한 것이 이루려 신념을 가지고 의지를 가지는 것이 믿음이 아니라는 것입니다. 믿음이 생명이라는 것은 믿지 않으려 해도 그럴 수 없는 존재가 되는 것입니다. 사람이 자신이 사람이 아니라고 믿을 방법이 없는 것과 같습니다.

그리고 그렇게 믿음이 생명에 관한 것이라는 것은 자기가 무엇을 해서 되는 것이 아니라는 의미입니다. 생각해보면 오늘 이 글을 읽을 정도의 자아를 가진 사람들이 사람으로 나기 위하여 자신이 무엇을 한 것은 없습니다. 심지어 사람으로 나서도 한 동안, 아니 오랫동안 사람이라는 존재의 정체성과 자아를 인식하지 못하고 살았었습니다. 그런 것이 생명입니다.

생명은 그렇듯 자신의 의지와 상관없는 절대적으로 수동적인 것입니다. 누가 자기 인생을 단 한 부분이라도 능동적인 선택을 했을까요? 그런 경우는 절대로 없습니다. 그와 같이 믿음도 절대적으로 수동적인 것이며, 사람이 무엇을 한다고 믿음이 좋아지는 것이 아닙니다. 사람이 할 수 있는 것은 그야말로 가만히 있는 것 그 뿐입니다. 그래서 은혜인 것입니다.

다만 한 가지 사람이 할 수 있는 것, 아니 해야 하는 것이 있는데 그것은 무엇을 하려는 것을 멈추는 것입니다. 그리고 말씀을 듣는 것입니다. 듣고 보는 그 수동적인 것, 그 하나 이외에 아무 것도 할 수 있는 것이 없습니다. 무엇보다 한다고 무슨 일이 일어나지도 않습니다. 오히려 하나님의 진노를 살 뿐입니다.

‘어떻게 해야 하나님의 생명이 자기 본성이 되는 것인가?’ 하는 것에 대한 답은 믿음을 가지려고도 하지 말고, 하나님을 위하여 무엇을 하려고도 하지 말며, 오직 정말로 이 말씀이야 말로 나의 운명과 정체성을 설명하는 말씀이라고 여기는 것을 듣고 있는 것입니다. 그리고 보는 것입니다. 그래서 교회가 필요한 것입니다. 그리스도의 생명이 된 사람들의 삶을 듣고 보는 것, 그것 이외에 우리가 하나님을 믿는 믿음을 가지게 되고, 또한 그리스도의 생명으로 거듭난 생명으로 살아 무심한 듯 살아도 성경이 저절로 지켜지는 생명이 되는 법은 없습니다.

문제는 이것이 너무 생소하고 어려운 것입니다. 하지만 생명은 시절을 좇아 과실을 맺기에 그 가만히 순종함 안에 있으면 불안하고 아무 일도 일어나지 않을 것 같은 그 순종이 생명을 낳게 됩니다. 우리가 불안하고 뭔가를 해야 할 것 같은 느낌이 드는 것은, 이때까지 그래보지 않았기 때문입니다. 그 순간이 바로 창세기 시작에 나오는 혼돈이라 할 수 있는 것입니다.

그러나 감히 말씀드리거니와, 이 블로그를 보시고 이 블로그에서 설명하고자 하는 하나님의 의를 보니 이것이 진정한 하나님의 말씀이라고 여겨졌다면 분명히 큰물을 건넌 심령이라고 보증할 수 있습니다. 이는 많은 사람들이게 이 블로그에 나오는 성경에 대한 해석은 자신이 가진 성경 지식의 추가 옵션으로 여겨지거나, 기존 신앙에 대한 청량감 정도로 여겨지기도 하기 때문입니다.

아마도 많은 분들이 신앙 안에서 온전한 신앙을 가지려 너무나 엄청난 수고를 해 오셨을 것입니다. 그리고 지금 이 글들을 대하는 바로 지금 아마 아무 것도 손에 가진 것이 없을 것입니다. 소비재인 인생을 위하여 수고하고, 하나님을 위하여 소비해야할 인생을 하나님을 의지하여 풍요하게 하려 애쓴 세월을 하나님께서 보상할리 없기 때문입니다.

그러나 그렇게 아무 것도 없는 빈손이 되어 이 글들을 대하고 있다면 그것이야 말로 진정한 복입니다. 그것이 진정 성경이 말씀하시는 복입니다. 지난 세월 어떤 신앙의 모습을 가졌더라도 그것에서 소득이 있었다면 그것에 만족하고 더 매진했을 것인데 그것이야 말로 진정한 저주이기 때문입니다. 행위로 의로워질 수 없는데 행위로 의로워진다고 가르치고 배우는 것이 소득이 있다고 여긴다면 그 참담함은 이루 말할 수 없는 것입니다.

믿음을 위하여 아무 것도 하려 하지 마십시오, 해야 할 것이 있다면 무엇인가를 하려고 하지 않는 것 그 하나면 충분합니다. 돌아보면 저도 대단한 하고지비(뭔가를 하려는 사람)였습니다. 최고이지는 않았지만, 저라는 인생이 가진 역량 안에서는 모든 것을 다 투자해서 하려했던 사람이라 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 소득이 없었습니다. 그리고 가만히 있어야 한다는 것을 듣고 알았을 때 그럴 수 없었고 한 없이 불안했습니다.

하지만 이제 신앙을 위하여 아무 것도 하지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 마음에서 일어나는 말씀들을 다 표현할 시간과 능력이 부족해서 안달이 난 삶이 되었습니다. 생활하는 순간순간 보게 되는 하나님의 의를 다 기록도 기억도 하지 못해 마음에 병이 날 지경이 되었습니다. 아무 것도 하지 않기 시작하고서 그렇게 되었는데, 세월이 가면 갈수록 점점 더해지고 있습니다. 정말로 예수님의 말씀과 같이 속에서 넘쳐남을 감당하기 어려운 지경이 되었습니다.

신앙은 무엇을 하려는 것에서 무엇을 하지 않는 자리로 가는 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 회개라는 것이 가던 방향을 돌아서서 가는 것이라고 했는데, 예수님을 찾아 온 부자 청년이 정작 돌아서야 하는 행함에서 끝내 무엇을 하려는 그 방향을 돌이키지 못했기에 예수님 앞에서 돌아서는 돌이킬 수 없는 죄를 범하게 된 것과 같이 신앙은 거저 마음에 감동이 있는 말씀을 듣고, 그리스도로 사는 사람의 삶을 보기만 하면 그 사람의 말씀과 이미지가 마음 안에서 생명이 될 것입니다. 그것이 성령의 감동입니다. 그러면 그 생명이 모든 것을 다 알아서 할 것입니다. 그래서 모든 것이 되시는 주님이신 것입니다.

It was really difficult to overflow from the inside like the words of Jesus.

Faith is to go from what you are trying to do to what you do not.
