(빌립보서 3:1-16) 삶이 남았다는 것은 이룰 것이 있다는 것

사람의 말에는 주소가 있습니다. 죄는 스스로 시인하는 것이지 누군가가 옆에서 ‘너 죄 있다.’고 지적해서 인정하는 세계가 아니듯이, 바울사도가 말씀하고 있는 ‘푯대를 향하여’라는 말은 성경을 지키기 위하여 노력하는 사람들이 아직 노력하기 위한 자신들을 변명하라고 한 말이 아닙니다. 이 말은 분명히 <온전히 이룬 자들은 이렇게 생각하라>고 한 말입니다. 아무나 쓰는 말이 아니라는 것입니다.

바울사도가 그리스도의 죽으심을 본 받아서 부활에 이르려고 애를 쓴다고 한 것 역시 같은 말입니다. 바울사도가 부활을 확신하지 못해서 아직 노력하고 있다는 것이 아닙니다. 그리스도의 죽으심을 본받는다는 것은 그리스도의 죽으심에 순종한다는 의미로, 자신의 의가 죽고 그리스도의 의로 다시 사는 부활의 삶인 십자가의 도에 순종하는 삶에 순종한다는 것입니다.

만약에 바울사도가 전도여행의 후반기에 기록한 이 빌립보서를 기록하는 시점에도 아직 복음에 대하여 이루지 못했다고 한다면 지금 이 빌립보서를 읽고 있는 사람들이 복음을 이루어낼 가능성이 얼마나 될까요? 단순히 그런 관점에서만 봐도 이 말씀이 아직 이루지 못함이 아니라, 자기가 가진 복음을 다 표현해내지 못함에 대한 말씀이라는 것을 알 수 있어야 합니다.

이 말씀을 하는 바울사도의 의도는 자신을 본받기 원하는 빌립보교회의 성도들에게 예수님께서 십자가에서 죽으심으로 보이신 뜻에 순종하고 살아가는 온전한 자신도 옥에 갇혀 있어 그 삶이 얼마가 남았을지 알 수 없지만 육신이 살아 있는 동안 늘 하나님께서 주신 육신으로 하나님의 의를 표현하는 삶을 살아내려 하는 마음으로 살고 있으니, 자신과 같이 그리스도의 복음이 온전히 속사람이 된 사람들도 마땅히 삶의 모든 것을 하나님의 의와 뜻을 육신으로 표현하는 그리스도(인)로서의 삶을 살 것을 권면하고 있는 것입니다.

특히 이 빌립보교회의 성도들은 바울사도와의 관계가 원만하고, 고린도나 골로새 교회와 같이 특별한 문제가 있어서 그것을 바로 잡기 위하여 빌립보서를 기록한 것이 아니라 할 수 있습니다. 빌립보교회의 성도들은 바울사도에 대한 사모함이 크고, 바울사도가 전한 복음에 순종하는 사람이 많은 교회입니다. 바울사도는 그런 빌립보의 성도들에게 자신이 누리는 기쁨과, 또 자신이 복음을 대하는 마음을 나누고자 하는 뜻을 서신으로 보낸 것이 빌립보서입니다.

그러므로 푯대를 향하여 가고 있다는 말씀과, 아직 이룬 것으로 여기지 않는다는 것은, 구원을 이루지 못했기에 노력하고 있다는 식의 말씀이 아닙니다. 바울이 아직 이루지 못했다고 한 것은 어떤 면에서는 아직 자신이 육신으로 살아 있기 때문에 하는 말입니다. 즉 살아 있다는 것은 아직 살 동안 하나님의 의와 뜻을 표현할 수 있기 때문입니다. 우리 육신은 살 동안 그 살아 있는 존재의 목적과 의미가 하나님의 의와 뜻을 표현하는 존재이기에 살아 있다는 것은 아직 이루어내야할 것이 남았다는 의미인 것입니다.

바울사도는 빌립보서 초반에 자신이 옥에 갇혀 있어서 죽게 될지 살아나게 될지 알 수 없는 상황 중에서 자신이 죽어서 하나님께로 가는 것이 자신에게는 더 좋은 것이라고 말하기도 했습니다. 사람이 살 동안 복음을 깨달아 알고, 그 복음을 육신으로 표현해내는 삶을 열심히 산다면, 그 사람은 분명히 죽는다는 것이 하나님께서 자신에게 육신을 주신 목적을 다 이루어낸 것이라는 것을 알게 됩니다.

이는 사람들도 다 그렇게 살고 있음에서 알 수 있습니다. 사람도 자신이 어떤 목적을 가지고 만들거나 구매한 물건이 그 목적을 다하면 버립니다. 그 버려지는 것은 허무해 보일 수 있지만 실상은 온전히 목적을 다했기에 목적 안에서 온전한 구원을 받은 것이고 다 이룬 것입니다. 더러운 것을 닦아낸 휴지가 아직 뜯지 않은 휴지보다 목적 안에서는 더 영광스러운 것이라는 것입니다.

바울사도는 그리스도의 온전한 복음을 자기 안에 가지고 있었습니다.(갈 6:17) 그것은 이루지 못한 것이 아닙니다. 자기 안에 있는 온전한 그리스도의 복음을 이루어내는 삶이 아직 남았다는 것입니다. 삶이 어떻게 남았든 그 남은 삶은 아직 이루지 못한 삶이라는 것입니다. 바울사도가 아직 잡은 것으로 여기지 않는다는 것은 남은 삶도 그리스도의 복음을 위하여 살겠다는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 빌립보의 성도들도 바울과 같은 마음을 가지고 살아가자는 권면을 하는 것이 빌립보서 3장에 나오는 고백적인 말씀인 것입니다.

이 말씀에 대하여 몇 번에 걸쳐 글을 쓰는 것은 육신의 행위로 의롭게 되고자 하는 사람들이 자기 행위가 아직 온전하지 않음을 변명하는 것에 이 놀라운 말씀을 도용하는 것이 옳지 않다는 것을 밝히는 것과, 구원으로부터 시작되는 그리스도의 복음으로 사는 삶은 살아 있는 동안 그것을 표현하면서 살아가는 것이기에 삶이 남았다면 아직 이룰 것이 있는 것이기에 삶을 자기 안에 있는 구원의 온전함을 이루어가며 사는 것이 그리스도의 삶이라는 것을 밝히기 위한 것입니다.
