빌립보서

성경 빌립보서는 바울의 옥중 서신 중의 하나이고 비교적 후반에 기록된 바울 서신입니다. 빌립보서는 말 그대로 빌립보에 보내는 편지입니다. 빌립보는 지금의 유럽에 세워진 첫 번째 교회인데 그 시작은 루디아라는 자주 장사(자주색 천을 파는 사람)에서 시작됩니다. 성령(예수의 영)이 바울 사도를 마케도냐로 이끌게 되고 그곳(빌립보)에서 루디아와 만나게 됩니다.(행 16장)

성경공부를 한다거나 강해를 한다면 의당 ‘빌립보서의 주제 or 기록 목적’을 이야기하기 마련입니다. 그런 관점에서 본다면 주된 의견은 <복음과 기쁨>이라고 하면 무난할 것 같습니다. 그러나 모든 성경의 주제는 예수 그리스도라는 것으로 일축하면 좋을 것 같습니다. 조금 살을 붙인다면 <예수는 그리스도>라는 것, 그리고 성경은 그리스도(인)가 되는 방법에 관한 것이 아니라 <그리스도의 정체성을 가진 사람의 삶은 이러하더라.>라고 그리스도의 정체성을 설명해 놓은 책이라는 것입니다.

또한 빌립보서는 바울 사도가 기록한 성경이 모두 그렇듯 서신서입니다. 로마의 감옥에서 빌립보 교회에서 바울을 보살피라고 보낸 에바브로 디도라는 사람이 아파서 빌립보로 돌아가는 길에 보낸 편지입니다. 좀 특색이 있다면 다른 서신서에 비해서 훈계적인 말씀보다는 빌립보 교회의 성도들에게 자신이 기쁨 중에 있다는 것을 이야기하면서 위로하는 내용이 많이 있다는 것이 조금의 특색이면 특색입니다.

빌립보 교회는 이 빌립보서로 볼 때 바울 사도에게 잘 순종한 교회였다고 할 수 있습니다. 바울 사도가 빌립보서를 시작하는 1장에서 자신으로 봐서는 다가온 죽음이 유익할 수 있으나 빌립보 교인들을 위하여 자신이 육신 안에서 더 사는 것도 좋은 것이라서 이 둘 중에 어느 것이 좋은지 자신이 알 수 없다는 말을 할 정도로 빌립보 교회와의 관계는 아주 좋았다고 볼 수 있습니다.

물론 다른 교회와 관계가 나빴다는 것은 아니지만 바울 사도가 옥에 갇힌 동안 바울 사도가 교회를 맡긴 에바브라를 무식한 사람 취급하며 세상의 학문에 밝은 사람이 교회를 이끄는 것이 좋다는 생각을 가지고 있어 바울을 근심하게 한 골로새 교회, 교회에 흘러 들어간 유대인들이 율법에 대한 주장으로 이방인들이 모인 로마 교회를 어지럽게 하는 것과 같은 문제에 대하여 훈계하는 서신서와는 달리 바울 사도의 신앙적 고백이 많이 들어 있는 그런 서신이라고 할 수 있습니다.

오늘날, 많은 사람들이 육신의 삶에 지쳐 있습니다. 예수를 믿어도, 교회를 다녀도 이런 저런 이유로 힘든 삶을 살고 있습니다. 이 빌립보서는 짧지만 근본적인 권면과 또 복음의 정체성을 말씀하고 있고, 무엇보다 기쁨보다 삶을 힘들게 여기는 많은 사람들에게 그리스도의 복음이 기쁨이 되는 것임을 바울 사도가 말씀하고 있습니다. 단순하게만 봐도 옥에 갇힌 바울 사도가 빌립보 교회의 성도들에게 기뻐하라고 권면하는 것이 그렇습니다.

우리가 신앙생활을 하는 것은 힘들고 지치는 세상의 삶 속에서 위로받고자 함이 아닙니다. 물론 하나님의 위로가 우리 육신의 삶이 느끼는 곤고함의 근원적 위로입니다만 하나님을 믿는 것은 그 위로가 종착지가 아니라는 것입니다. 하나님을 믿는다는 것은 위로를 넘어 기쁨이 되는 것입니다. 

우리가 예수 그리스도를 믿어 그 의에 이르고, 우리가 그리스도의 성품을 가진 하나님의 아들로서 살아가는 것이 세상을 향해서 “너는 돈 있냐? 나는 예수 있다!”라는 자위적인 외침을 위한 것이 아닙니다. 예수를 믿는다는 것은 “내가 이 삶으로 나지 않았다면 어쩔 뻔 했나?”라는 감탄과 감사와 기쁨의 삶이 된다는 것을 생각해보는 말씀이 빌립보서가 아닌가 생각합니다.
