(빌립보서 2:12-18) 너희 구원을 이루라

‘구원’이라는 것은 기독교 신앙의 근간 중의 근간입니다. 예수님을 믿어서 죄와 사망에서 구원을 얻는다는 것입니다. 사실 그 말만 놓고 봐도 지금의 신앙에 얼마나 많은 모순이 있는지 드러납니다. 예수님을 믿어서 죄와 사망에서 구원을 이루었다면 죄와 사망은 구원 받은 사람의 문제가 아니라는 것이기 때문입니다. 그렇다는 것은 더 이상 기도할 때 회개할 이유가 없어야 하는데 기도의 공식(?)에 회개가 들어 있다는 것은 사실 모순입니다. 이는 하나님이 보시는 죄와 사람들이 자기 기준에 의한 죄를 혼돈하기 때문이기는 합니다.

또 한 가지 구원에 대하여 이야기할 때 아주 중요한 것이 있는데 그것은 많은 기독교인들은 구원이 신앙의 목표라고 여긴다는 것입니다. 하지만 그것은 다소 초점이 맞지 않는 사진과 같은 생각입니다. 구원이라는 것은 신앙의 목표가 아닙니다. 구원은 신앙의 시작이라는 것입니다. 구원이 신앙의 목표인지 아니면 시작인지는 많은 차이가 있습니다. 우선 시작과 끝은 과정을 바라보는 방향이 반대입니다. 속사람이 겉사람으로 나타나는 것과 겉사람의 행실로 속사람의 정체성을 바꾸려는 것이 반대이듯.

바울사도가 빌립보 성도들에게 말합니다. “너희 구원을 이루라!”라고. 구원을 이룬다고 하니 구원이 목표인 것 같아 보이지만 여기서 ‘이루라’는 의미는 work out의 의미입니다.(실제로 영어 성경에서 그렇게 쓰고 있습니다.) 이는 없는 것을 이루어내라는 것이 아니라 가지고 있는 것을 이루어내라는 것입니다. 즉 빌립보 성도들이 가진 구원을 표현해 내라는 것입니다. 이것으로 볼 때도 구원은 목표가 아니라 시작인 것이 분명합니다.

바울사도가 이루라고 하고 있는 구원은 앞선 2장의 1-11절의 말씀에 설명되어 있습니다. 그리스도의 마음을 가지고 나보다 남을 낫게 여기는 삶을 통하여 그 삶을 본 모든 사람이 예수의 이름 앞에 무릎을 꿇게 만드는 삶을 사는 것이 구원이라고 설명하고 있다는 것입니다. 이것은 행동으로 되는 것이 아니라 그리스도 예수의 마음이 속사람에 있어 그것이 겉사람으로 나타는 것이 구원이라는 것입니다.

구원이라는 것은 죄에서 구함을 받는 것입니다. 죄라는 것은 선악과를 가짐으로 사람에게 깃든 것입니다. 사람이 자신이 가진 선과 악의 기준을 가진 것이 죄악이고, 반대로 그것이 해결되면 구원인 것이라는 것입니다. 그것은 자신의 기준이 아니라 하나님의 기준이 사람에게 의의 기준이 되었다는 것이기 때문입니다. 그렇다는 것, 사람이 하나님의 의를 자기 의의 기준으로 삼는다는 것은 그 사람이 예수님과 같은 정체성을 가진 존재가 되었다는 것입니다. 예수님께서 보이신 것이 바로 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 되신, 하나님의 의를 육신으로 표현하신 분이기 때문입니다.

그러므로 구원이라는 것은 단순하게 어떤 압박에서 벗어난 것이 아니라, 사람이 예수 그리스도와 동일한 성품과 정체성을 가졌다는 것입니다. 그것이 구원인 것입니다. 그러므로 구원은 그 때부터 시작입니다. 그리스도 예수의 품성을 가지고 살아가는 것이 구원이며, 생명이기에 그 생명을 가지고 살아가는 것이 구원을 이루는 것이기 때문입니다. 사람이 사람으로 날 때 이미 사람이고, 살면서 사람으로 살아서 사람답게 사는 것과 같은 것입니다.

구원에 대한 개념도 중요하지만, 구원이 신앙의 목표인지 아니면 그것이 시작이고 삶으로 표현되는 근원인지를 아는 것도 매우 중요합니다. 그것을 거꾸로 안다는 것은 당연히 구원을 모르는 것이기 때문입니다. 망치의 쇠뭉치(머리)를 손으로 쥐고 사용한다는 것은 당연히 망치가 무엇인지 모르는 것과 같습니다. 구원이 자신에게 새로운 시작인지, 아니면 교회에 다니는 목적이며, 끝내 지켜야 하는 어떤 것으로 보는 것은 구원이 없는 것입니다. 알지도 못한 것이 자기 것이라고 하는 것은 도적질이기 때문입니다.
